Installing an asphalt shingle roof is a great way to improve the appearance and durability of your home. While it may seem like a task for a DIY homeowner, we sincerely recommend that trained professionals like roofing crews at Tidewater Roofing performs a the tear down and installatio of your new GAF Asphalt Shingle roof instead.

Step 1: Preparation

Tidewater Roofing helps ensure you have enough GAF Asphalt Shingles to cover the entire roof, plus a few extra “in case.” We’ll remove any debris or old roofing material.

Step 2: Install the Underlayment

Before laying the shingles, we install a layer of roofing felt, also known as underlayment, over the entire roof surface. This will act as a waterproof barrier between the shingles and the roof deck. We use a a staple gun to secure the underlayment to the roof, making sure to overlap each row by several inches.

Step 3: Install the Drip Edge

Next, Tidewater Roofing installs a drip edge along the eaves of the roof. The drip edge is a metal strip that will prevent water from seeping under the shingles at the roof edge.

Step 4: Install the Starter Strip

The starter strip is a row of shingles that is installed along the eaves of the roof, over the drip edge. The starter strip will provide a base for the first row of shingles and prevent water from seeping under the shingles at the roof edge.

Step 5: Install the Shingles

Starting at one end of the roof, we begin by laying the shingles in a row, following the GAF’s instructions. We ensure that the rows are straight, and tagger the shingles to prevent leaks. We secure each shingle with roofing nails, on each side of the shingle.

Step 6: Install Ridge Vents

Ridge vents are installed at the peak of the roof and will allow for proper ventilation in the attic. We cut a hole in the roof deck where the ridge vent will be installed, and then attach the ridge vent using roofing nails and roofing cement.

Step 7: Finish the Roof

Once all the shingles have been installed, we finish the roof by installing the ridge cap. The ridge cap is a row of shingles that covers the peak of the roof and provides a finished look. We cut the shingles to fit the ridge, and secure them with roofing nails and roofing cement.

By hiring Tidewater Roofing to install your roof, you can be assured that your new roof will provide long-lasting protection for your home.

Please note unforeseen issues may arise during the tear-off process, particularly if the current roof has experienced storm damage or other harmful affects of aging. Roofing Experts of NC will promptly inform you of any additional work or materials needed to repair the underlying issue.
